Terrible Ted Nugent busted the Alamo crowd up during the
coast-to-coast, grassroots Tea Party in protest against U.S.
Government taxing and spending--perhaps the largest of
its type in American history.
Early in the day, Texas Governor Rick Perry spoke at an
Austin Tea Party re-emphasizing his enthusiasm for HCR50,
emphasizing states’ rights under the 10th Amendment.
Austin media reports the crowd answered the governor
with chants of, “Secede! Secede!” Perry characterizes the
current state of the federal government as “oppressive.”
The San Antonio Tea Party kicked off with live broadcasts
by national radio and TV commentator Glenn Beck and
continued with a local broadcast by WOAI’s Joe “Pags”
Pagliarulo. Citizens came and went beginning early in the
morning, attendance estimates ranging from 9,000-15,000.
A press conference at the Emily Morgan Hotel across the
street from the Alamo preceded the day’s local events,
hosted by officers of the San Antonio Tea Party. Chairman
Robin Juhl, media representative Julia Hayden and legal
council Eric Green fielded questions from a mixed bag of
local and regional journalists.
A couple of the questions posed were loaded with rock
salt, particularly one from an S.A. Current representative
who asked for the Tea Party’s recommendations for a
revised U.S. budget. On the present, Chairman Juhl
suggested budget and TARP proposals should be read by
someone before passed on to the taxpayers. Green
intimated haphazard government spending is more
disturbing than the taxing.
Security organizations present included San Antonio Police
Department, Parks Police, Bexar County Sheriff’s
Department, Constables and private security contingents
for various celebrities. A “Homeland Security” vehicle was
spotted parked on the perimeter.
Beck and Pags introduced the event itself, beginning at 6:
00pm. KSLR radio’s Adam McManus delivered an
invocation followed by enthusiastic presentations from
Nugent and other guests of the local Tea Party group.
Katharine Moreno, a Columbian immigrant, had surprisingly
strong words for the District of Columbia and those in
government who she believes are driving the Republic
towards socialism.
Nugent, “the Motor City Madman,” as he’s known, is
famously outspoken regarding his deep-seated
conservative values. Hailing members and veterans of our
armed forces, as well as his “blood brothers in law
enforcement,” Nugent told attendees it is not up to
politicians, but voters, to change the country. He insisted
onlookers call their friends and loved ones and urge they
contact elected officials immediately and regularly.
Then, in a teeth-gritting display, Nugent ripped the britches
off the Alamo Plaza crowd with his electrified, wha-wha-
pedaling version of Star Spangled Banner, which is always
sure to alarm old folks, children and animals.
Terri Hall represented the San Antonio Toll Party, speaking
on other aspects of perceived unreasonable taxation and
government waste at the local level.
Spokespersons for the party emphasized the need to put
pressure on elected officials, and press on with peaceful
demonstrations from the grassroots. Efforts are underway
to orchestrate another event July 4th.
